Banbury Under 15s Progress to the County Cup Final

Keith Cook

A brace of tries from Charlie Cranley in the first half help the home team defeat Wallingford Quins at the DCS Stadium

In a County Cup campaign that is starting to mirror that of the Bulls, victory against Henley in their last cup match set up a home semi-final tie against Wallingford Quins (an amalgamation of the Wallingford and Oxford Harlequins Under 15s teams). The visitors held the bragging rights after the two friendly fixtures between the two teams earlier in the season and were looking to complete the treble to secure a cup final berth on their home ground on the AGP.
Banbury started brightly, with good line speed exerting pressure on the Quins players. With most of the play taking part in opposition half, Banbury took the lead when Cian Gerber forced his was over the line in the corner. A tricky conversion was missed, but the home team had a deserved lead. A second try followed soon after, with Charles Howard intercepting a loose pass to stroll in under the posts, with Cian Gerber adding the extras from the tee to give Banbury a 12 - 0 lead. The lead was extended further when Charlie Cranley crossed in the corner, before breaking through to score his second and the teams fourth try under the posts, Cian Gerber converting the latter to take the score to 24 - 0. The home team ended the first half with 14 players after Danny Byrne saw yellow for not retreating ten metres and tackling the player after a quickly taken tap penalty. The ensuing penalty saw Quins kick to the corner and, with a man advantage, drove over to reduce the deficit with an unconverted try to make the score 24 - 5 at half time.
Wallingford Quins stepped up the pressure in the second half, and doubled their score with their second unconverted try of the match. Despite further attacks within the Banbury 22, the defence held firm to leave Banbury 24 - 10 victors to book their place in the County Cup Final on 5th April against Henley, who scored in the last minute of their tie at Chinnor to win their Semi-Final.
