Banbury Under 15s enjoyed a rare Sunday afternoon appearance in front of the Grandstand and Clubhouse on Pitch 1 for their second match in this seasons County Cup.
Both teams had changed line-ups from those that took to the field in the friendly match at Witney a fortnight earlier, with Banbury playing in their unfamiliar "super slim" change kit of red and white at the request of the referee to avoid a clash with the blue and black of the visitors.
Witney kicked off into the bright Autumnal sunshine and, after a period of pressure in the Banbury half, won a penalty in front of the posts which was duly kicked to give the visitors an early three point lead. Banbury hit back straight away which Charlie Cranley racing down the right wing to touch down under the posts for the first of his four tries. Cian Gerber was unable to add the extras, with the conversion attempt coming back off the post. Charlie Cranley was soon back on the score sheet with an identical score to his first, which Cian Gerber converted. Witney reduced the deficit to 6 with another penalty from in front of the posts before Cian Gerber scored and converted a try. Witney hit back with an unconverted try of their own just before the interval to make the score 19 - 11.
Banbury added to their tally with Cian Gerber and Charlie Cranley scoring tries, all of which were converted by Cian Gerber, to take the score to 40 - 11 before Banbury were reduced to 14 following a Yellow Card being shown to Rafe Wingrove for a high tackle (the prop "taking one for the team" after a number of infringements by Banbury players). With the numerical advantage, Witney scored their second try, which went unconverted. With Banbury back up to the full complement of players, Regan Brown scored out to the left, with Cian Gerber nailing a tricky conversion from the touchline. The final try of the match was scored by Cian Gerber under the posts, which Conner Capell converted to make the final score 54 - 16 to Banbury.
Credit to Witney who competed well throughout the match, which was a lot closer than the scoreline might suggest.
