Banbury Under 15s started their season with a Cup Match at the North Hinksey Sports Park against Oxford.
The rain subsided in time for kick-off, with Banbury playing up the slight slope in the first half. Banbury enjoyed the majority of the territory and, after the closely fought opening exchanges, Charlie Cranley broke free down the left wing to open the scoring with Cian Gerber adding the extras from the kicking tee. Cranley's second try of the match followed shortly after in similar fashion, this time the conversion attempt going wide. A few minutes later, a good team move ended with Charles Howard running a great line to break through the defence to score under the posts. Again Cian Gerber pushed his conversion attempt wide of the uprights. With the half-time whistle approaching, Charlie Cranley broke free and, after kicking the ball through, won the foot race to touch down by the posts to complete his hat-trick with Cian Gerber learning from his previous attempt to add the extras.
Half-time: Oxford 0 Banbury 24
The second half started in much the same way as the first ended, with Banbury on the attack. Patrick Sturla made a good break and with the line at his mercy unselfishly offloaded to Henry Bailey to score to the right, Cian Gerber unable to add the extras. Oliver Cook was next to score for Banbury when the lock found himself with a clear run to the line before making sure he had plenty of downward pressure on the ball to score. With the game entering the last quarter, Oxford finally started to enjoy some territory in the Banbury half and launched a sustained attack on the Banbury line. Despite some resolute defence, Oxford finally managed to get the ball over the line near the posts and kick the conversion.
A good all round display from Banbury with some areas to work on in training.
Well done to Oxford for a well fought competitive game and we look forward to welcoming you to Banbury later in the season.
