Tilehouse Lane, Shirley - Saturday 7th December 2014
Match reporting by Bob Mitchelmore.
With the forwards holding their own against a bigger and heavier pack the pacey Banbury backs had a plentiful supply of ball and good handling and running lines frequently cut the Old Yardleians defence to shreds.
The Bulls were soon on the scoreboard when fullback, Dan Tooth, entered the line creating an overlap for Josh Deegan to cross in the corner. Next to score was Jimmy Manley (pictured) who shrugged of a number of attempted tackles to force his way over.
Following these setbacks it was the turn of the Old Yardleians to put the Bulls defence to the test, but repeated close range charges were resisted and lifting the siege the Bulls went back on the attack, but a loose pass in midfield was intercepted by fly half, Jake White, who cantered to the line unopposed for the try which he converted himself.
The Bulls continued to run the ball at every opportunity and their lead was extended when Eddie Phillips took a tap penalty deep in the Old Yardleians half to feed Dan Tooth who crossed in the corner. Phillips added the extras with an excellent conversion.
The try bonus point was wrapped up before halftime when the hard working second row forward, Matt Brock, who supplied a stream of possession from the line out throughout the game, was on hand to gather a loose ball after Josh Deegan was tackled just short of the line.
The Bulls continued to dominate in the second half and whilst a number of promising moves broke down with an over ambitious offload there was still much to admire in the handling and passing. Deegan, with his second, opened the scoring in the second half after the Bulls retained possession going through a number of phases. Phillips was on target with another conversion from the touchline.
With the Old Yardleians losing their discipline the Bulls enjoyed plenty of possession and a flowing move from deep in their own half saw Tooth cross for his second. Next it was the turn of Manley, who capped a fine performance, to run a good supporting line to cross and this effort was quickly followed by his hat trick try as several tackles were brushed off with another powerful run. Both tries were converted by Phillips to post the half century of points.
The Old Yardleians did gain consolation with a try from Carl Bucknell, converted by White, to leave the final score 50-14 to the Bulls.
