Banbury put in a composed performance to beat Trowbridge 14-45. Men of the match, Matt Goode and George Ding helped the Bulls secure all the points.
After a number of weeks since their last game the Bulls were still missing a number of usual first team players. Ken Key returned to the starting line-up whilst Matt Goode and Owen Michael got their first starts for the Bulls this season. Sean Baker was in line to make his debut for the Bulls with a spot on the bench.
Banbury got off to the perfect start with three early tries in the opening quarter of the match. Angus Johnson started the scoring when he touched down following a rolling maul. Ian Isham added the second and it was the forwards and another rolling maul who created the try. Finally, Matt Goode rolled back the years with a trademark rampaging run from the edge of the opposition 22 to complete a blistering opening quarter. Ed Phillips converting all three tries to give Banbury an early 0-21 lead.
Luke Moore got the home side on the scoreboard when he drove over from close range, Ollie Weaver converting. But Banbury responded in the best way possible with the try of the game. Trowbridge kicked deep but Quinten Blythe returned from the halfway line, beating a number of players before scoring in the left-hand corner. The conversion attempt went wide to leave it 7-26 at half time.
The Bulls continued the second half where they finished the first with Jacob Turner scoring after the Banbury forwards drove a 5m scrum over the Trowbridge try line.
Banbury’s momentum was only halted when Owen Michael was yellow carded for a high seat belt style tackle. Trowbridge took advantage of the extra man to add a second try, Michael Stone sneaking his way over from close range.
The Banbury pack had a great game, and this was highlighted by a fantastic rolling maul from the Bulls midway through the second half. Driving the ball at least 30m up the pitch. The backs used this platform to attack, and James Miller threw a lovely dummy before scoring under the posts for an easy finish.
Matt Goode completed the scoring with a lovely run and score. Goode cutting back against the defence before running through the last man and over the try line. This would prove to be his last action of the game as he called for Sean Baker to replace him for a Bulls debut.
Owen Michael picked up a second yellow card and subsequent red card when he was penalised for another high seat belt tackle.
The full-time whistle followed shortly after with the final score being 14-45. Banbury had been forced into a number of changes but performed well and the players that came in showing great energy and enthusiasm. By getting the victory the Bulls had secured promotion with two games to spare. Matt Goode and George Ding were selected as Banbury’s men of the match. Goode playing his first game for the Bulls this season showed off all his experience with a dominating display. Ding put in a monster shift, leading the tackle count, and making metres with the ball as well. This Saturday will be the Bulls final home game of the season vs Windsor.
