Like showing a red rag to a Bull....Banbury respond with emphatic win.

The Bulls got the New Year off to a good start with an away bonus point win over bottom of the table, Bedworth.

Smarts Road, Bedworth - Saturday 4th January 2014

The voice of James Kerr appears as himself.

The wet conditions made the Bulls high tempo handling game difficult, but with the forwards creating a solid platform numerous chances were made but too often the final pass was to go astray. However coach, James Kerr will have been pleased with the overall performance, marred only by a harsh red card for centre, James Heywood whose strong tackle on his opposite number was deemed dangerous.

Banbury opened the scoring after ten minutes when from a scrum near halfway the ball was fed to fly half, Alex Fogavini who brushed off several tackles to score a fine individual try which he converted himself.

With the Bulls forwards dominating in both tight and loose pressure was maintained on the Bedworth defence and the lead was extended when crisp handling by the backs put winger Lawrence Jackson in for a try which Fogavini again converted.

Penalties were then exchanged, but with the game becoming increasingly fractious first Heywood and then the Bedworth hooker were shown red cards to leave both sides a man short. With half time approaching Banbury established an attacking position inside the Bedworth 22 and more good handling and passing created a try for winger, Chris Davies. With Fogavini adding the extras the Bulls held a commanding 24-3 lead at the break.

Whilst dominating possession and territory for much of the second half Banbury, despite going close on several occasions, could only add a sharply taken try from skipper Eddie Phillips, and even with Bedworth closing the gap with a try from close range after Banbury made a hash of clearing their lines, the result was never in doubt.

With a little more accuracy the Bulls would have added to the try tally, but in mitigation the very wet underfoot conditions did make open rugby difficult. The forwards, with Nick Pratt returning from injury in the second row, and Chris Phillips in rampant form at No 8, held the upper hand and they will be looking to build on this performance for sterner tasks ahead.

Next week Banbury entertain Droitwich at Bodicote Park and having won at Droitwich earlier in the season will be looking for another bonus point win to establish themselves in the top half of the table.

After the match, Coach James Kerr spoke live with Radio Horton Sport and here's the link to listen again (best opened with Internet Explorer).
