Banbury Bulls need just one more point to win Midlands 2 East South after defeating Old Newtonians 29-5.This victory, coupled with Market Harborough’s defeat to Lutterworth, means the Bulls are almost there.
Captain Sean Bannister put the Bulls ahead with two tries from neatly executed catch-and-drive moves by the forwards as the visitors dominated territory and possession.
Hooker Liam Stratford set up wing Jed Boyle for try No 3, then Mike Smith converrted a score from centre Guy Sturla. Giving Banbury a commanding 22-0 lead at half time.
Old Newts however came out fighting after the break and put in a much improved second half performance to keep the Bulls pinned back in their territory for much of the half.
And they were justly rewarded for their efforts with an uncoverted try from their strong-running Number 8. However this score seemed to sting the Bulls back into life and they quickly responded to snuff out any chance of an unlikely comeback. The score came as Bannister completed his hat-trick with Smith converting.
The Bulls next league fixture is their last home league match of the season where they entertain Peterborough Lions on Saturday 10th April, kick-off 3pm.
