Bulls run riot in complete performance!

Alex Inch8 Dec 2019 - 21:58

Banbury closed to within 2 points of top of the league with an emphatic 104-3 victory over Trowbridge. Hat-tricks for Tom Macdonald and Joe Mills helped secure the win.

Ed Phillips kicked Banbury into an early lead to settle any early nerves. Trowbridge penalised for being offside. 3-0.

Justin Parker scored the opening try for Banbury. Tommy Gray showed some lovely feet to break down the right flank before drawing the last and passing to Parker on his outside shoulder. The winger curved his run from out wide to tap down under the posts. Converted, 10-0.

Tom Weaver kicked a penalty for Trowbridge after Banbury were penalised for a scrum penalty in their own 22, 10-3.

Joe Mills scored the first of his three tries shortly after. The Banbury pack dragged in the defenders with a rolling maul and when the ball got
out to the backs, Tommy Gray made a mini break before offloading to Mills for a try to the left of the posts. Ed Phillips converted, 17-3.

James Jennings charged down a kick before scooping up the loose ball and running in untouched for an easy score under the posts. Converted, 24-3.

James Jennings added a second almost immediately afterwards. Joel Thomas made a barnstorming run from his own half which he is quickly becoming famous for, but was stopped metres short of the line. As Trowbridge tried to get back onside Ed Phillips popped the ball for Jennings who darted through the defensive line for the try bonus point. Converted, 31-3.

From the restart Tommy Gray noticed a mismatch down the blind side and cut his way through the Trowbridge forward pack before offloading on the edge of the opposition 22. Some quick hands and Tom Macdonald touched down to the left of the posts. Converted, 38-3.

Some lovely hands from James Leonardi released James Jennings for a clean break into the Trowbridge half. Jennings found Macdonald who whipped the ball on to Joe Mills. Mills found himself one on one with the last man and turned him inside out before scoring to the left of the posts for his second try of the game. Converted, 45-3.

Tom Macdonald scored his second with a break from the restart. Tom Eyston broke down the right wing and threw a lovely blind pass to Justin Parker. Parker chipped over the top and Macdonald won the race to touch down in front of the clubhouse. Converted, 52-3.

It was all Banbury and from the restart the Bulls scored again. Joel Thomas caught the restart and burst through the Trowbridge line. Some quick hands played in Tom Burman down the left wing and a lovely dummy from Burman allowed him to cruise over to the left of the posts. Conversion missed, 57-3.

Duncan Leese started and finished a move from his own 22 for another try before the half time whistle. James Leonardi breaking into the opposition 22, drawing the full-back and passing to Leese for a score under the posts. Converted, 64-3.

Jack Briggs came on at halftime and he was straight into the action. Running a hard line to burst through the opposition defence before drawing the last man and offloading to Joe Mills to complete his hat-trick out to the right of the posts. Converted, 71-3.

Tom Macdonald forced a turnover on the edge of the Trowbridge 22 to put Banbury back on the attack. Dan Kirwin whipped the ball to Tom Burman and the winger showed off some lovely footwork to stand up his opposite number and sprint in untouched under the posts. Converted, 78-3.

Tom Macdonald completed his hat-trick after the restart. Tommy Gray threw a lovely dummy to burst out of his own half before offloading to Macdonald. The flanker showed all his pace to outsprint the cover defence and touchdown close to the sticks. The conversion came back off the post, 83-3.

Tom Eyston scored his first try of the season after barrelling over from close range. Duncan Leese broke into the opposition 22 and as the Trowbridge defence got back Eyston was on hand to crash over. Converted, 90-3.

Tom Macdonald made it 7 tries in 2 games when he crossed for his fourth try of the game. Tom Eyston pounced on a turnover to release Dan Kirwin. Kirwin went from his own 22 to the edge of the oppositions. Duncan Leese broke before drawing the last man and passing inside to Macdonald for a try under the posts. Converted, 97-3.

Quick thinking from Justin Parker and Duncan Leese brought up the triple figures for Banbury. The Bulls won a lineout which Parker took quickly to release Leese who sprinted half the pitch for a try under the posts. Converted, 104-3.

The full-time whistle followed shortly after. A complete performance from the Bulls. Anyone could have made a case for Man of the Match but Kallum Dixey was selected. Dixey was simply immense from the restart. Bringing down a number of contested catches. He defended well and started a number of breaks with important turnovers. Next weekend Banbury travel to Wimborne to complete the first half of the season.

Speaking to Head Coach, Matt Goode, after the game:

104-3 win. Does it get much better than a score line like that for you as Head Coach?
“I’ve been so happy these past few weeks about the strength in depth we’ve shown. The youngsters we’ve had coming in. They’ve been working really hard and playing some great rugby. We’ve got 5-6 players who’ve been playing regular first team rugby this season in the second team today because the competition for places is that good. Look the score line is brilliant, but I’m delighted at seeing the development of our young players.”

You had try scorers from all over the pitch. Forwards, backs, is that the most pleasing thing. How they’re coming together as a team?
“They’re young so they’ve got that want and that drive. They want that shirt and to fight for their place. We scored in a number of different ways today. It shows we’re not one dimensional, we can play in a number of different ways. You’ll see some of those tries today. We’re making 40-50 metres breaks and we’ve got guys from the front row trying to get on the end of them. Everyone wants to support each other.”

Two away games to finish 2019. You’ve got to think you’ll take some momentum from today into those?
“We’re just taking things on step at a time. We’ve got a tough trip to Wimborne next weekend. They’re very good at home. They’re physical so we need to make sure we’re ready for that game. We’ll enjoy tonight and the 100 points and then our focus on Tuesday turns back to Wimborne.”
