Bodicote Park – Saturday 12th December 2015
Match report by Chris 'Cakes' Phillips.
Banbury elected to play into the strong wind in the first half, and looked to put Old Eds under pressure from the start.
Banbury opened the scoring after a well worked line out fed the Banbury back line and, man of the match, James Heywood (pictured) was put through a hole in the defence. After making good yards he fed fly half Sam Stoop who couldn't quite make it over the line. However, flanker Sean Bannister was on had to apply the finishing touch. A successful conversion from the Skipper Ed Phillips, 7-0.
Banbury kept the scoreboard ticking over as Phillips nudged over a penalty to make it 10-0.
Heywood was also instrumental in the 2nd try after another precision line out fed his barnstorming run in midfield. This time the grateful recipient of the final pass was winger Adam Walsh. Walsh still had a little work to do as he deflected the Old Eds cover defence with a successful hand off and left the fullback trailing in his wake to increase the Bulls lead to 15-0. A missed conversion attempt by Phillips kept the score at 15-0
Heywood again laid on the 3rd try, this time for Banbury’s top try scorer full back Joe Mills. Heywood cut a hard line against Old Eds drift defence and through he went. Mills followed up in support and Heywood produced a deft pass back against his running angle to put Mills under the posts for his 14th try of the season. Unfortunately Phillips couldn't add the extras as he pulled the conversion attempt. However, it was 20-0 to Banbury at half time.
After turning around in the second half, now playing into the wind, Banbury looked to the effective boot of Stoop to keep Old Eds pinned in their half. The tactic and pressure told as not only were Old Eds unable to battle against the wind to affect the scoreboard, but Banbury used the pressure to add to their tally.
Veteran second row forward Matt Brock stole a line out in Old Eds territory which lead to Heywood once again being called on to make the yards in midfield. Unsurprising to most he once again broke the line. This time, however, he didn't need any help in finishing the try as he cruised over the line to secure the Bulls a bonus point.
What was to be the only try of the half was the least Heywood deserved after such a performance. Phillips was on hand to add the conversion and take the score to 27-0 and which remained until the finish.
The Bulls face a tough trip away to Pinley next Saturday when coach James Kerr will be looking for the Bulls to retain their excellent form.
