Banbury RUFC Communications13 Jun - 15:33

Century at the Graf

The Bulls have their eighth outing of the season with Kenilworth visiting the Graf UK Stadium.

On a brisk but dry start, the match started right from the off. The Bulls started on the front foot, pushing up the field, where all the hard work paid off with Ed Berridge piercing through from close range. The try was converted [7-0]. Banbury then doubled their lead through Owen Wildgoose on his return from injury. A well-worked try by Wildgoo, as he used his pace to good use in darting down the corner. The try was converted [0-14]. Kenilworth then saw their share of play reaching the Banbury twenty-two, but a strong Banbury defence forced the turnover, displacing the ball, which was scooped up by Olly Venn, who ran in a sixty-metre try to score. The try was converted [21-0]. Similarly, the ball was found in the hands of Charlie Cranley, who went on a fantastic solo run, breaking the Kenilworth line. Once in stride, Cranley executes a perfect chip and chase, regathering to beat the remaining defenders in a footrace to score in the corner, securing the bonus point. The try was converted [28-0]. The Bulls were fully in control by the fifth score. From a dominant scrum five metres out, Ed Berridge at Number Eight controlled the ball with finesse at the back before diving over himself from close range for his second of the afternoon. The try was converted [35-0]. After a dominant first half from the Bulls, the visitors left their mark on the match next. Gaining territory inside the Bulls' five metres through penalties, they fought through a resilient Banbury defence to find a gap to the left of the posts for their first score. The conversion was unsuccessful [35-5]. Next to strike were the Bulls. Through an excellent jump from Doug Backhouse at the restart, he found himself one-on-one with the opposition full back. With a simple offload following his clean take, Matt Dandy took full advantage of it and went over for Banbury. The try was converted [42-5]. The visitors were the last to leave their mark on the half. From the restart, an unfortunate knock from the Bulls presented a chance for the visitors. From the scrum, Kenilworth moved the ball well and touched down for their second try of the afternoon. The conversion was unsuccessful [42-10].

After a dominant start for the Bulls, there is more to give in the second half and another level to reach to finish strongly.

Half Time - Banbury 42-10 Kenilworth

The second half started brightly for the Bulls. Ed Berridge topped off a fantastic afternoon for himself, sealing his hat-trick. Finding a mismatch down the right winning the Bulls capitalised with the first try of the second half. The try was converted [49-10]. The half was then dominated by the Bulls running in nine further tries. The next came from Joe Mills. From an excellent breaking run from Quinten Blythe, which took him close to the try line, he released a perfectly timed offload picked up by Mills for a score. The try was converted [56-10]. The Bulls passed the sixty mark with a great score by Jacob Drabble. From a Kenilworth overthrow at the line, Drabble magnificently gathered before a forty-metre sprint saw him run in the try. The try was converted [63-10]. Banbury went from strength to strength. Sean Woollard, playing out of position on the afternoon, scored a deserved try. The try was converted [70-10]. From a brilliant run on the return, Berridge made the headlines with an excellent four-try haul. From an excellent piece of individual skill from Dandy, Berridge takes the offload to score. The try was converted [77-0]. Tries came thick and fast in the final stages first saw a perfect cameo from Tommy Grey. Coming on, he broke from his half before playing in Quinten Blythe for his try. The try was converted [84-10]. Cranley was up to his usual best with an outrageous piece of skill starting a move that brought the next try for the Bulls. Running through under the posts, it was an excellent finish. The try was converted [91-10]. Moments later, Cranley was at it again, shrugging a tackle off and sprinting over from halfway. The try was unconverted, ending a perfect tally from the tee [96-10]. Next came a penalty try and a yellow card for Kenilworth, a certain try denied from a Kenilworth slap down saw the visitors punished [103-10]. Banbury then equalled numbers up with Olly Venni, also seeing yellow after an accidental collision in the air. The match was 14 vs 14 for the last 10 minutes. The final try of the day came from Matt Dandy. With another excellent performance, Dandy with the show and go pass saw him take off and touch down for the Bulls. The try was converted [110-10].

At full time, the Bulls completed a great afternoon of rugby. Credit to Kenilworth, they stuck at it all game.

The Bulls are back on the road next week as they travel to West Park to face Long Eaton.
