NINE try thriller at Ivor Preece Field

The Bulls arrived at a dry but breezy Ivor Preece Field off the back of a great win over Bromsgrove last time out. It was the Bulls who struck first with ten minutes on the clock. From an excellent run from Quinten Blythe, young Owen Wildgoose perfectly read the play to receive a brilliantly timed drawn pass from Blythe to touch down to the left of the posts, conversion was missed [0-5]. Moments later it was the Bulls who were adjudged to be offside and Broadstreet opted to kick for posts, the penalty was successful [3-5]. The Bulls looked to grow further in the match and from the excellent pace of Wildgoose a precise offload after a blistering run down the right wing found Matt Dandy who fended off two tackles before going down in the corner, conversion was missed [3-10]. The competitiveness of the clash was highlighted moments later when Broadstreet managed to use the ball in hand well through Number 8 Colby Stanton-Ford managed to break through to touch down. Dubious grounding, but received the benefit of the doubt from the referee, the conversion was missed [8-10]. Banbury settled into the final ten minutes of the half well but were sadly hit by injury when Alex Nicholls left the field with what looked like a foot/ankle injury. Will McCubbin came on for Alex. It was Banbury to strike next, just a metre off the Broadstreet try line the ball was stolen and Broadstreet broke up the field. With a broken field and an unsettled defence, Broadstreet made the most of two phases before touching down in the corner, conversion was missed [13-10]. Banbury settled back into the game and in the final five minutes, Wildgoose struck again. With brilliant play from the backs, they released Wilgoose down the left wing to score in the corner. Four tries in his last two matches he was on fire. The conversion was missed [13-15]. As half-time is called it was too many missed first tackles for the Bulls in the first half. Looking dangerous with ball in hand but not quite finding the levels of last weekend. All to play for in the second half.

Half Time - Broadstreet 13-15 Banbury

With hardly any time on the clock in the second half Wildgoose secured hat trick emphatically. With a beautiful solo try starting down the right wing, a deft chip in behind presented the foot race which Wildgoose outsprinted his opposite man to pick up and go over to score seamlessly. The conversion was missed [13-20]. In this tight contest, Broadstreet was next to strike with a quickly taken penalty with the Bulls not reacting quickly enough, the try was converted to bring the score level [20-20]. The next ten minutes through up some brilliant end-to-end rugby with neither team able to capitalise on their efforts. Moments after the Bulls were awarded a penalty, opting to kick to the corner rather than a shot at goal. In the resulting lineout, Broadstreet were penalised and the Bulls were awarded another penalty, a shot at goal was called. Oscar Triggs stepped up and slotted the three points to put the Bulls ahead going into the last twenty minutes [20-23]. Things got better for the Bulls when Blythe made a fantastic run finding Alex Wilton with another well-timed drawn pass. Taking a shot to the rips for the team, his pass set up Wilton down the wing to round the try area to close the angle for the conversion. The conversion was successful [20-30]. In the final points of the afternoon, they went to Broadstreet. From the lineout, Broadstreet opted to catch and drive. From the rolling maul backed by their whole team, they managed to drive over and score. The conversion was successful [27-30]. Shortly after the full-time whistle sounded rounding off a tough battle for the Bulls. Defending well and securing the five points. Credit to Broadstreet, never gave up and much improved from the reverse fixture. It is a week off now for the Bulls and a chance to heal up a depleted squad. They return to the Graf UK Stadium on 17th February to face Burton at home.
