Match Preview: Banbury RUFC vs Bromsgrove RFC
Saturday 17th October 2026 | Graf UK Stadium | Kick-off: 3:00pm

Banbury RUFC return to the Graf UK Stadium this Saturday for their first home league fixture of the 2026–27 season, welcoming Bromsgrove RFC in Round 4 of Regional 1 Midlands.

After three successive away matches to begin the campaign, Head Coach Soane Tongaʻuiha and Director of Rugby Matt Goode finally bring the Bulls back to Bodicote with two victories from their opening three fixtures.

Bromsgrove arrive having made an equally encouraging start, setting up another testing afternoon as Banbury look to respond to their first defeat of the season and make a positive start on home soil.

Back at the Graf
The delayed start to the community rugby season has resulted in an unusual opening month for Banbury.

The Bulls began with consecutive away victories, producing an impressive seven-try performance to defeat Syston 47–26 before edging a much tighter contest 28–27 at Broadstreet.

Last weekend brought a first setback of the campaign at Stourton Park.

Stourbridge, who reached the final stage of the promotion pathway last season, maintained their unbeaten start with a 43–15 victory over Banbury.

Those opening three road trips have nevertheless yielded nine league points and provided Tongaʻuiha and Goode with a solid platform from which to continue building.

Saturday now offers a different challenge as the Bulls run out at the Graf UK Stadium for their first competitive home fixture of the new season.

The Challenge: Bromsgrove RFC
Bromsgrove have established themselves as consistent challengers towards the upper reaches of Regional 1 Midlands in recent seasons.

Third-place finishes in both 2023–24 and 2024–25 were followed by fifth position last season, when Bromsgrove again demonstrated their ability to compete with the leading sides across the division.

They have started 2026–27 strongly.

An opening-day trip to Stourbridge ended in a narrow 27–24 defeat, but Bromsgrove responded immediately with a 38–29 home victory over Bridgnorth.

Last Saturday brought another positive result as they travelled to Newport (Salop) and secured a 31–24 victory.

Two consecutive wins have moved Bromsgrove to third in the early Regional 1 Midlands standings with ten points from their opening three fixtures.

Recent Meetings
Banbury and Bromsgrove have shared several competitive encounters over recent seasons.

  • April 2026 | Banbury 55–18 Bromsgrove
  • September 2025 | Bromsgrove 31–19 Banbury
  • November 2024 | Banbury 19–14 Bromsgrove

Last season's two meetings produced contrasting results.

Bromsgrove began the 2025–26 campaign with a 31–19 victory at Finstall Park, but Banbury reversed that result emphatically when the sides met again on the final afternoon of the season.

The Bulls produced an outstanding attacking display at the Graf UK Stadium, running in nine tries on their way to a 55–18 victory and ending the campaign on a high.

There was also a closely fought meeting at Bodicote during 2024–25, when Banbury edged a physical contest 19–14.

The Bulls will therefore be looking to continue a positive recent home record against Saturday's visitors.

Key Focus Areas for Banbury
Responding to Stourbridge
Last Saturday brought Banbury's first defeat of the new season after consecutive victories had provided an excellent start.

The focus now shifts to the response.

Returning home gives the Bulls an immediate opportunity to reset and build on the many positives established across their opening two victories.

Making Home Advantage Count
Three consecutive away fixtures have provided a demanding introduction to the campaign.

Saturday represents Banbury's first opportunity to play in front of the home support in Regional 1 Midlands this season, and establishing intensity from the opening exchanges will be important.

The Bulls enjoyed some memorable afternoons at the Graf UK Stadium during the second half of last season and will be aiming to begin their 2026–27 home programme in similar fashion.

Matching Bromsgrove's Momentum
Bromsgrove arrive with confidence after consecutive victories.

Wins over Bridgnorth and Newport (Salop) have followed their narrow opening defeat at Stourbridge, meaning the visitors travel to Oxfordshire having established some early momentum of their own.

Banbury will need to match that confidence and physicality from the outset.

Set-Piece Accuracy
As ever at this level, scrum and lineout will provide an important foundation.

Reliable possession will give the Bulls opportunities to establish their attacking game while preventing Bromsgrove from controlling territory through their own set-piece.

Accuracy in these areas could be particularly important if Saturday develops into another close contest between the sides.

Discipline and Territory
Bromsgrove's opening three matches have all been relatively competitive on the scoreboard.

Banbury will want to avoid offering their visitors straightforward opportunities to gain territory and build pressure through penalties.

Controlling where the game is played and maintaining discipline will be central to establishing momentum at home.

Taking Opportunities
The Bulls demonstrated against Syston and Broadstreet that they possess the attacking threat to convert opportunities when they arrive.

Against a Bromsgrove side that has already secured two wins from three, Banbury will need to be similarly clinical inside the opposition 22.

Last season's 55–18 victory showed what the Bulls can produce when their attacking game begins to flow, but Saturday represents a fresh contest against a side arriving in good early-season form.

Final Thoughts
After three weeks on the road, Regional 1 Midlands rugby finally returns to the Graf UK Stadium.

Banbury's opening run has produced victories at Syston and Broadstreet followed by defeat against an impressive Stourbridge side, leaving the Bulls with two wins from three heading into their home opener.

Bromsgrove arrive with the same win-loss record and one additional league point, having responded to their opening defeat with consecutive victories over Bridgnorth and Newport (Salop).

Recent meetings have provided plenty of competitive rugby, while Banbury will also carry positive memories from their emphatic victory over Bromsgrove on the final afternoon of last season.

For Tongaʻuiha, Goode and the Bulls, Saturday provides the opportunity to respond to last weekend, establish their home campaign and continue what has been an encouraging opening month of the new season.
