Banbury RUFC begin their 2026–27 Regional 1 Midlands campaign this Saturday as the Bulls travel to Leicestershire to face Syston RFC at Barkby Road.

Following the delayed start to the community rugby season, Head Coach Soane Tongaʻuiha and Director of Rugby Matt Goode will finally lead their side into competitive league action, with a challenging away fixture providing the opening test of the new campaign.

After a productive pre-season programme, Banbury will be looking to carry their preparations into the league and make a positive start to another 22-match Regional 1 Midlands season.

Building on 2025–26
The Bulls finished the 2025–26 campaign strongly, ultimately placing eighth in Regional 1 Midlands with 66 points.

Banbury produced some eye-catching attacking performances during the campaign and developed considerable momentum through the second half of the season, including away victories at Newport (Salop), Bridgnorth and Drybrook.

The season concluded with an emphatic 55–18 victory over Bromsgrove at the Graf UK Stadium, giving Tongaʻuiha and Goode a positive foundation to build upon heading into the summer and the new campaign.

Saturday now represents a fresh start, with a reshaped Regional 1 Midlands providing another competitive challenge across the months ahead.

The Challenge: Syston RFC
Syston return to Regional 1 Midlands this season following a year competing at National 2 level.

The Leicestershire club produced a dominant 2024–25 campaign at this level, completing the league season unbeaten with 21 victories and one draw from their 22 matches to secure promotion to National 2 West.

Their stay at Level 4 lasted one season before a return to Regional 1 Midlands for 2026–27, meaning Banbury's opening fixture comes against a side bringing the experience of a full National League campaign back into the division.

Founded in 1887, Syston are based at Barkby Road in Queniborough and have established themselves as familiar opponents to Banbury across recent Regional 1 Midlands seasons.
